It seems that childhood and adult ADHD is an increasingly diagnosed condition
in Western culture.
And in many cases drug therapy seems to work, but in others the side effects
are limiting its success. So natural therapies are often sought as an alternative
treatment.
And omega 3 fatty acids have come into the picture recently.
But how does omega
3 or fish oils relate to ADHD and its symptoms?
There has been a few medical studies on the effect of fish oil on ADD and ADHD.
They were found to be significantly lower in children with ADHD than those
without ADHD.
So there seems to be a correlation between lower levels of omega 3s and the
diagnosis of ADHD but the cause and effect is unclear.
Dietary intake of omega 3 were similar in both groups.
Perhaps the group with ADHD metabolise or absorb omega 3 differently to children
without ADD.
Yes, it is interesting to see more reseach on the brain and omega 3.
For example, fish oils have been shown to be related to a lower incidence of
depression and also has been shown in studies to decrease the symptoms of depression
and requirement for medications.
Perhaps there are also revealing studies looking at the incidence of ADHD in
countries with high intakes of omega 3?
So keep an eye out on more research in this area of omega 3 fats.
More research means more information and more certainty of the relationships
between fish oils and problems such as ADD.
So keep an eye out on further developments in this area of the brain, ADHD
and the omega 3 fatty acids.
Our society is becoming more holistic, and this includes the medical profession
as well as regular moms and dads.
In suummary, maybe for ADHD, it will offer hope for those who are either not able
to or cannot tolerate conventional drugs such as Ritalin or dexamphetamine.
No doubt, more medical research on omega 3s will come out very soon.
